Slovakia – Introduction of Mediation into the Slovak legal system
From 2002-3, CMI Director Bill Marsh led a team of experts in a UK-Government-financed programme to introduce mediation into the Slovak legal system. Working closely with the Ministry of Justice and other Slovak partners, the team spent an intensive three-month period assessing existing perceptions of mediation and the court system, taking into account the views of a large sample of interested parties. The detailed report that followed set out our advice on how most effectively to introduce mediation, and was welcomed by the Minister of Justice.
Implementing this report required us to draft new mediation legislation, and establish a regulatory framework for mediation in Slovakia. We liaised closely with judges, lawyers, mediators and the business community, and delivered extensive public awareness, business and mediator training programmes throughout the country.
The work was continued in further programmes in Slovakia.
