Romania – advising on the development of mediation in Romania
In 2004, CMI was retained to assist with the development of mediation in Romania, driven in part by Romania’s proposed EU accession. Our work covered a broad remit, including advising the Government on proposed mediation legislation, training for lawyers and judges, and presentations for business.
It was particularly important to bring together the main players in the mediation field so as to generate a common view on the best approach to developing mediation. CMI achieved this through a series of stakeholder consultations for all interested parties, bringing together mediators, lawyers, judicial representatives, business figures and government, and for the first time developing a genuine consensus on how to develop mediation in Romania.
Following completion of the project in March 2005, the Ministry of Justice expressly requested our continued involvement. CMI agreed and negotiated additional finance from a third party donor to meet the cost, and then continued in the role of Adviser to the Ministry of Justice, overseeing the finalisation of the legislation and working with MPs and others to promote the reforms.
