European Union
In 1999 and 2000, CMI’s Bill Marsh represented the UK in a 5-country consortium (UK, France, Netherlands, Greece and Italy) commissioned to advise the European Commission on the existing state of ADR within the (then) 15 EU Member States, and to make proposals for its development.
The consortium produced a detailed report on the state of ADR in each Member State, detailing the law and practice in each one, the key bodies involved, statistical data, and other features. It drafted detailed policy recommendations to guide the Commission in its considerations of how to develop ADR within the EU. Subsequent EU policy has been clearly influenced by these recommendations.
In May 2000, the consortium staged a major international conference on mediation in Paris, attended by delegates and speakers from over 15 countries, making it the most “international” mediation conference held in Europe.
