Europe - Second Inter-Governmental Mediation Workshop (2007)
This event was the second in a ground-breaking CMI initiative bringing together leading government figures responsible for implementing mediation in seventeen governments from across Central and Eastern Europe.
Launched in 2006 with an inaugural meeting in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Inter-Governmental Mediation Workshop is now in its second year. It brings together key government personnel from participating countries for in-depth and off-the-record discussions about improving out-of-court settlement of disputes and conflicts in their respective countries.
Chaired and facililated by CMI, and co-hosted together with the British Embassy in Zagreb and the Croatian Ministry of Justice, this year's event featured senior representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey, plus the UK and the Netherlands, coming together for two days of talks. Discussions focussed on central aspects of mediation reform such as the growth of court-annexed mediation programmes, developing demand for mediation, and how best to regulate and evaluate this emerging field.
The event has become the key inter-governmental forum in the region for exchanging lessons and developing best practice on mediation reform. The annual Workshop aims to build expertise and cooperation on mediation issues amongst governments and so enhance mediation reform. Mediation itself is growing in importance and use as part of the process of improving justice systems right across the CEE region.
